How it works
Four sources, read together, before you drive.
RiverFinn does not guess at a river. It reads the instruments that are actually on it, the forecast for that spot, the agency's own notices and rules, and puts them on one screen. Finn explains what they add up to.
RiverFinn reads the gauges
Every 15 minutes RiverFinn checks the USGS and Colorado DWR stations attached to each reach for their latest streamflow, and water temperature where a thermometer exists. The stations publish on their own schedule, so each reading keeps its observation time.
It layers on the rest
The National Weather Service forecast for the reach, the state agency's closures and advisories, and the standing regulations for that stretch — flies-only, catch-and-release, seasons.
It scores what it can
Where enough of the inputs are measured, a Conditions Score compares them with what the reach's species prefer. Where they are not, RiverFinn shows the measurements it has and says what is missing.

What RiverFinn will not do
- Show a water temperature for a reach that has no thermometer.
- Give a score when too little is measured to deserve one.
- Let a good number outrank a closure. A closed water says closed on every screen.
- Have Finn invent a hatch, a flow or a rule that RiverFinn did not record.
- Decide whether it is safe or legal to fish. The score reads conditions against what the species prefer; closures, advisories and the 70 °F stop are separate, they always come first, and the managing agency is the authority on the rules.
- Tell you where the fish are. RiverFinn measures water, not fish — no counts, no run arrivals, no guesses.
- Charge for safety. Closures, advisories, regulation changes and warm-water warnings reach every account.
